Substance Use Evaluation
Comprehensive Assessment for Recovery & Support
If you're exploring your relationship with substance use — whether for recovery planning, legal requirements, employment, or personal clarity — a substance use evaluation provides professional assessment and recommendations tailored to your situation.
At Serenity Space, we offer compassionate, non-judgmental substance use evaluations that help you understand your patterns and next steps. We work with individuals in recovery, those considering treatment, and those navigating legal or employment requirements.
What is a Substance Use Evaluation?
A substance use evaluation is a comprehensive clinical assessment that examines your substance use history, patterns, severity, and impact on your life. The evaluation includes:
Clinical interview — Detailed conversation about your substance use history, triggers, and patterns
Psychological screening — Assessment for co-occurring mental health conditions (depression, anxiety, trauma, ADHD)
Functional assessment — How substance use has affected your relationships, work, health, and legal status
Written report — Diagnostic findings, risk assessment, and personalized recommendations for treatment or support
Who This Is For
This evaluation is ideal if you:
Are exploring recovery options and need professional assessment
Are court-ordered to complete a substance use evaluation
Are required by your employer or licensing board to complete an evaluation
Want to understand your substance use patterns and whether treatment is recommended
Are documenting your commitment to recovery
Need clarity on whether you meet criteria for substance use disorder

Our Approach
We approach substance use evaluation with:
Compassion — Not judgment. We understand recovery is complex.
Clinical expertise — We assess severity, risk, and co-occurring conditions accurately.
Personalization — Recommendations tailored to YOUR situation, not one-size-fits-all.
Support — Whether this is court-ordered or self-initiated, we're here to help.
Common Questions
Q: Is this confidential?
A: Yes, with standard exceptions. If you're court-ordered, the report goes to the court. Otherwise, it's confidential between you and us. We'll clarify confidentiality limits upfront.
Q: What if I'm still using substances?
A: We're not here to judge. Honesty helps us understand your situation and make appropriate recommendations. Your assessment is more accurate if you're honest about current use.
Q: Will this hurt me legally?
A: If you're court-ordered, the evaluation is required anyway. Being honest and showing up demonstrates your commitment to the process, which judges consider.
Q: I've tried treatment before and it didn't work.
A: That's common. This evaluation can help identify what wasn't working and what might work better next time. Different approaches work for different people.
Q: Can I bring family/support person?
A: Generally, we recommend coming alone so you can speak freely. We can discuss if accessibility or safety needs require someone present.
Q: What if I don't want treatment?
A: We assess and recommend based on what we find. The choice of what to do next is yours, though some situations (legal, employment) may require treatment as a condition.
Q: How is this different from therapy?
A: An evaluation is a one-time assessment focused on diagnosis and recommendations. Therapy is ongoing treatment. We can discuss therapy separately if you want that support.
